My Top 30 Most Anticipated Films of 2011: Part 2

From B-D...
Brighton Rock
UK release date: 4th February 2011
Genre: Crime, Thriller, Drama
IMDb summary: Charts the headlong fall of Pinkie, a razor-wielding disadvantaged teenager with a religious death wish.

Now that’s what I call a trailer! I’ve been looking forward to this film for a long time now and that trailer just makes me wish February could come sooner. Wonderfully shot with relative newcomer Sam Riley and Helen Mirren consuming every scene. Riley is one to watch. His presence in this trailer is extraordinary playing the bad man as well as the lead sympathetic character. I really, really cannot wait to see Brighton Rock.

Ceremony
US release date: 8th April 2011
Genre: Coming-of-age, comedy
Dark Horizons summary: A young man falls hard for an older woman about to be married. The infatuation prompts him to take along his unwitting friend to a beach town in an effort to break up the wedding. Upon arriving, the young men quickly realize just how out of place they are among the stately British groom-to-be and his guests.

Starring Uma Thurman, Michael Angarano and Lee Pace this movie could be hit or miss. The premise sounds good, but with only this short, albeit funny, clip to go on it’s difficult to tell how good this film will be. Let’s hope it lives up to expectations.
Contagion
UK release date: 21st October 2011
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Dark Horizons summary: The story follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart.
No trailer released yet.
Currently shooting in 3D in Illinois, California and Hong Kong the impressive star cast (Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow and Marion Cotillard) is sure to turn heads. What matters though is how they play out the spread of the virus. Suspiciously close to the Survivors plot, Contagion (meaning contagious disease) could be cheesy or moving (like I am Legend); it really is too close to call. However having Kate Winslet in the cast usually is a sign of quality and Matt Damon is certainly no stranger of the action thriller genre, so I’m hoping Contagion shapes up to be the great Autumn blockbuster it promises to be.
A Dangerous Method
UK release date: TBA
Genre: Thriller, Drama
Dark Horizons summary: Set on the eve of World War I, the story is based on the turbulent relationships between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender - Inglourious Basterds), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen - The Road), and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), the troubled but beautiful young woman who comes between them.

This film looks really interesting to me, being the sociology student that I am. Unfortunately there are no trailers or clips to see yet, but from the brilliant cast and locations, including Vienna, Switzerland and Berlin it certainly looks promising. It is based on John Kerr’s 1993 non-fiction book of the same name, which was adapted into a stage play in 2002 by oscar-winner, british writer Christopher Hampton, who has now adapted it ready for the big screen. He also adapted Dangerous Liaisons and Atonement so the film is in good hands. There’s no doubt this could be a superb film.

Drive
US release date: 16th September 2011
Genre: Action, Drama
Dark Horizons summary: The story follows a nameless Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a freelance getaway driver during robberies. When a bank heist goes wrong, he ends up on the run with a contract on his head and an ex-con’s girlfriend in his car.
No trailer released yet.
Anything starring Carey Mulligan and Ryan Gosling will have instant interest from me. Not much is known about the film, other than it’s an independent high-energy thriller, with clearly some outstanding acting talent on display. I hope to see it for myself when it is released to find out.
