IMDb Plot Summary: Benjamin Barry is an advertising executive competing with two female co-workers for a major campaign for a diamond merchant. He cuts a deal with his competitors that the account is his if he can make a woman of their choice fall in love with him in 10 days. In comes Andie Anderson who, in turn, is writing a story on how to lose a guy in 10 days as a bet with her boss to be allowed to write more substantial stories. With a hidden agenda in each camp, will either party be able to complete their mission?
My Review: For what it is, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is actually one of the best recent romantic comedies. It is an unusual concept from the usual ‘boy meets girl’ and... actually... it’s really funny. Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson have great chemistry and they bounce off one another highlighting each scenes funny nuances.
Yeah, it can be soppy. It is a rom-com after all but it more easily engages both genders as it is genuinely interesting as Kate Hudson attempts to ‘lose’ McConaughey going more and more extreme and extravagant each day and McConaughey desperately tries to hold on to her.
Of course the whole thing is complete fantasy and just laughably unrealistic but it works as it is warm, hilarious and different enough to actually engage and involve you as an audience. It really is one of my favourite romantic comedies as it matches some of the classics and stands tall above the rubbish cheesy stuff hollywood constantly churns out. Bravo!
Score: 8/10
