On TV: Saturday 24th September 2011
Channel: BBC One 7pm
Episode Type: 12/13
In 1 Sentence: Hilarious, touching and eerie: the perfect penultimate episode of the series!
BBC Summary: The Doctor's final days are upon him - but when he drops in on an old friend, the Cybermen are waiting. Gareth Roberts followed up his brilliant story of The Lodger with Closing Time, a tale of friendship, Cybermen and the triumph of human emotion. A great mixture of humour, drama and poignancy, the adventure proved a fantastic way to lead into the series finale.
My Review: The Lodger was a surprise hit of last season - it hit the perfect note for a companion-lite episode; effortlessly funny while giving us more from the Doctor than we usually see, just irrestible. So, like many fans, I was particuarly excited to hear that Craig was back, something which rarely ever happens. However my anticipation wasn’t without a little trepidation. Bringing Craig back may ruin the legacy of The Lodger. I hoped they weren’t bringing James Corden back, no matter how lovely he is, just for the sake of a few headlines or funny trailers.
Thankfully I needn’t have worried: Closing Time was definitely a story in its own right. And Cybermen! It really was spine-tingling; every twist and turn was played out with such great charm. Excellent performances and brilliant plot twists - there isn’t much more to say except I absolutely loved it!
Score: 9/10
