Kidulthood

UK Release: 3rd March 2006
Watched on TV: Thursday 14th July 2011
Rating: 15
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 1hr 29mins
Tagline: Before adulthood comes...
IMDb Plot Summary: A day in the life of a group of troubled 15-year-olds growing up in west London.
My Review: A brilliant Noel Clarke writing debut representing london teenage life today. The directing from Menhaj Huda is fresh, with bold and dynamic camera usage lifting the film from an average gritty drama to a unique level, with reality at its core.
Kidulthood is grittiness at its best; hard to watch at times as the acting was so realistic. There was quite a loose plot focusing primarily on showing controversial behaviour and language but by the end the threads pull together satisfyingly. I wouldn’t say it was enjoyable to watch, fascinating might be a better word.
It is 100% British, which I’m proud to say and it was refreshing to hear the language, see the places, fashion and behaviour that real teenagers use in Britain today. All this and with a brilliant soundtrack, the scene that uses The Streets Blinded by the lights was particuarly poignant and made me realise what a special film this is.
A portrait of a generation, some may say it is exaggerated - but aren’t all stories? That’s the only way to tell them right.
Score: 7.5/10
