Doctor Who: The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe

On TV: Sunday 25th December 2011
Channel: BBC One 7pm
Episode Type: Christmas Special
In 1 Sentence: A Christmassy spectacle full of child-like wonder and... a forest.
BBC Summary: The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe is a festive adventure as magical as Santa Claus and as timeless as the Doctor himself! It sees the Time Lord befriend the Arwells, a family from war-torn Britain who are about to experience a wintry wonderland where beauty and danger await...

My Review: Well, here we are, it’s Christmas once again and so the customary Doctor Who special is rolled out once again. Now I am a big fan of  Doctor Who as you may have spotted on this blog but the Christmas special’s are usually a little hit and miss. But this one was... different. It was Christmassy and went for it the whole hog unashamedly. It was ridiculously cheesy, but full of a child-like wonder that fits Christmas day perfectly.
Claire Skinner held the show together, however Bill Bailey and the other two people in space suits were hardly present at all and there was almost no reason for them to be there. I think that is where the problem for me was: it was too light. It was all too sweet and there was no real scares or darkness. But I suppose short but sweet is what you want on Christmas day. It just wasn’t incredible but did the job.
And may I say it was lovely seeing Amy and Rory at the end, adding a touch of cosy warmth at the end as they shut their TARDIS blue door and the Doctor wiped away a ‘happy tear’. Love and happiness shone through...
Score: 7.5/10
