My Review: Starting off old-school, reminding me of Blair’s dreams of classic Hollywood movies, I knew that no matter what happened in this episode I would love it. As a die-hard Gossip Girl fan, any GG is better than none, but thankfully the quality was all there as Serena, Nate and Chuck were visiting LA to ‘reinvent’ themselves, and in Chuck’s case become a ‘Yes’ man - I can’t wait to see him back to his old ways! There seems to be a tendency for the season premieres to feature ‘reborn’ Chuck’s and then slowly see him twist and turn to the dark side. Episode 1 is a bit more of a light hearted affair, with Serena turning from It Girl to Working Girl on set of a movie with the usual back-stabbing shenanigans that could indicate a new love interest. Nate has found himself an older woman, which adds a bit of comedy to the mix.
Of course, last season’s cliffhanger was a pregnancy test in Serena and Blair’s bathroom bin, and I’m sure the writers will drag out who is the father for the majority of the season. It is assumed that the baby’s Blairs, which would make for a nice love triangle between Chuck and Louis, or even a square with Dan coming in to the mix. But who knows with Serena off the alcohol, they’re obviously trying to keep us guessing. All good fun!
Yet Blair has enough on her plate with her upcoming nuptials to Prince Louis, her fairytale romance beginning to show cracks, when he doesn’t stand up for her. Already you can tell this relationship isn’t going to last. And her running to Dan at the first sign of trouble appears to be an indicator of her true feelings. I am all for Chuck and Blair, but Dan and Blair would be interesting. Ultimately though Chuck and Blair belong together and no matter how many Louis’, Lord Marcus’ or Dan’s, the outcome will always be their reconciliation.
For me personally Season 5 is my first season watching it on TV as I’ve had a whirlwind romance with all the boxsets for the past year. I’m not sure how I’ll cope with whole weeks between episodes and irritating ad breaks, but I’ll sit through a week’s worth of adverts for an episode of Gossip Girl. Within the first few episodes of Season 1 it became one of my favourite TV shows and it looks like Season 5 won’t change that!
Score: 9/10
