My Review: Perhaps now that I am 18, and am continually exploring the various incredible ‘adult’ films that are out there, it was with no surprise that I found this film rather juvenile for my taste. I have to admit that when this film came out a few years ago I did actually go along and see it, having been a big fan of Step Up. And, quite obviously now I think about it, catching it on TV it was a lot less effective than in 3D on the big screen.
And I don’t know whether I’d forgotten or I’ve just changed a lot in my views and tastes over the past few years that this film was what I call the perilous 3C’s: cringeworthy, cheesy and cliche.
Now my view may be completely unfair - I came in 20 minutes in off the back of watching Jennifer’s Body which is pretty much the polar opposite to this film. But then I am, or at least was, supposedly the ‘target audience’ to this film being a teenage girl. And so it was quite a disappointment how unrealistic and completely ‘uncool’ I found this film. It was very try-hard, horrendously predictable and just so generally so far removed from reality it was painful. Yes, the dancing was fun to watch, but we need more than that for it to be a somewhat decent film.
Back in 2006, Step Up set the bar high and the following stampede of ‘dance’ films have all generally been let downs, but this unfortunately was a let down. It’s a shame as it was British and had a reasonable soundtrack but the magic just wasn’t there - we’ve seen it all before now.
But it can’t have been that bad as StreetDance 2 is in cinemas now... oh dear...
Score: 5.5/10
