IMDb Plot Summary: A young couple move into a new apartment, only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbours and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins controlling her life.
My Review: Rosemary’s Baby is a peculiar film, and for a horror, not particuarly terrifying. There’s definitely plenty of tension, but it just isn’t scary - just pretty odd. The only time I thought I might have to turn it off is during the dream sequence and that was only because it got too darn weird.
But Mia Farrow! She gave a startling performance, making Rosemary’s plight even more believable and empathetic.
Perhaps, being of a different generation, I am just not scared of the same things. I was definitely expecting more, being an 18 certificate - there wasn’t much of a reason for it at all.
And unfortunately it wasn’t an amazingly satisfying ending. If the makers had left the audience hanging in terms of whether Rosemary was mad or if her neighbours really were witches then it could have made for a much more interesting film. Instead it was just left with her (almost literally) holding the baby, with no real conclusion.
Score: 7/10
