My Review: As predicted this film was pretty painstakingly awful, and yet not as horrendous as some of the reviews would have you believe. As yes this is a terrible film that you wouldn’t necessarily choose to or pay to see but it was late on a saturday night, I was bored and wanted to see if it was as bad as people have said.
That said, it was still had some redeeming qualities else the film would never have been made - it was satisfyingly sweet, amusing and heart-warming enough to pass for a standard issue rom-com. It was just the cheesiness or it all and the predictability of it that made it hard to stomach at times.
Actually it wouldn’t have been that bad a film if it weren’t for the non-existent chemistry between leads Hugh Grant and Sarah JessicaParker. You couldn’t get two more different and incompatible people and SJP I particuarly dislike as an actress so that doesn’t help!
If you want to sink into the sofa and not have to think at all about what your viewing (which is inevitably difficult as a media student) then it does the job as being a throw-away forgettable film that just about quenches the boredom. It’s done with no style or panache but the concept wasn’t half-bad - it’s kind of a waste really.
Score: 5/10
