On TV: Tuesday 5th April 2011
Channel: BBC One 9pm
Episode Type: Three-part drama
In 1 Sentence: Warm, charming girly fun.
BBC Summary: A group of friends set up their own, all-female taxi firm in the face of their chaotic personal lives, and opposition from existing companies. Comedy ensues as they struggle to make the business work.
My Review: Beginning with a funeral the seriousness didn’t even last until the cremation - when Sex Bomb by Tom Jones played! This was because the funeral was the two leads best friend, Shazza, who gave them the idea of ‘Candy Cabs’, so Jackie and Elaine are determined to make her proud.
Being an Eastenders fan it was great to see Jo Joyner have some fun (outside miserable Walford!) playing Jackie and she was a great match with Lisa Millett (Elaine) making for a lovely realistic relationship between them both. The death of Shazza hung over this first episode a bit and brought the tone down at times but mid-way through it was full-steam ahead as the girls started the business.
There were a few sub-plots going on, most of which were intriguing, but all very predictable. It reminded me of Chick-lit - can see it a mile off but enjoyable all the same.
All in all, Candy Cabs was exactly what I was expecting - a comedy drama that sits perfectly on a Tuesday night. Something the BBC do well.
Score: 8/10
Thanks for reminding me of this program actually, I was going to watch it but...forgot. Hopefully I-Player will have it.
