Being Human: S4 Ep4&5 - A Spectre Calls and Hold The Front Page

On TV: Sunday 26th February and 4th March 2012
Channel: BBC Three 9pm
Episode Type: 4&5/8
In 1 Sentence: Creepy Kirby and the legendary Adam; things are finally picking up...
BBC Summary: Ep4: Kirby, a ghost from the 1970s, comes to stay at Honolulu Heights. But is he friend or foe?
Ep5: Teenage vampire Adam and his schoolmistress lover cause havoc for our heroes when they turn up at Honolulu Heights on the run from the press.

My Review: Kirby is one hell of a creepy guy and right from the beginning he starts to worm his way in, breaking up the group. While the plot for episode 4 was pretty predictable it was also heartbreaking as Kirby promised Tom a surprise birthday party - something he has never had. You feel incredibly sorry for him as he such such a sweet innocent little werewolf. I hope he never loses these qualities but in terms of character development he needs to grow up a bit by the end of the series. Annie also has stayed in one place but Hal managed to do some growing this week as he goes in search of answers while maintaining his ‘issues’ of being a vampire. While it was a bit better this week it still feels like Being Human is stuck in a rut. There’s comedy galore but romance and the darker stuff are few and far between.
Yet episode 5 was a throwback to last series with the fantastic return of Adam, one of my favourite Being Human characters. And while, yes, he is absolutely hilarious there is always a darker undertone which I relish about him. Also promised was the introduction of a new mythical type character which as Episode 5 showed us turned out to be Adam’s new girlfriend. Episode 5 has to be my favourite episode so far as it got the balance between comedy and tragedy and at last there was a bit of romance. The ending appeared to be the end of Adam’s story however which is disappointing as he is such a strong character. Also simmering in episode 5 was the exposing of vampires and werewolves to the public and next week looks set to be an explosion in that plot line...
Score: Ep4: 7.5 Ep5: 8.5/10
