My Review: OK. Where do I even start with this film?
To begin with I found it rather try-hard in the ‘creating an atmosphere’ side of the film as you could see how they’d put together the dark colours and music to create the mood of film. Even their house, which is made of glass, seemed to say more about the film than anything much else that happened in it. You could almost hear the film makers chuckle, thinking they’re so clever to have put the main characters in a house made of glass, representing how fragile and sharp the character's relationships are, and how they’re about to be ‘shattered’ at any point (and indeed it does in the climax)!
It was all a bit pretentious for my liking and as the plot spiraled into almost horror territory, it was hard to pin down exactly what the makers were striving for. It was impossible to like any of the characters and I actually felt quite sad for them all as they all had pretty miserable lives!
Despite the odd tone and unlikeable characters Amanda Seyfried was rather good but considering the film centered more on Julianna Moore I think Moore could have been better - and Liam Neeson felt out of place altogether.
It just didn’t have any sense of realism, so it was hard to care or really get drawn into the plot, yet the glamorous locations and swanky music made it - not interesting - but satisfying enough to see it through until the end.
Score: 5/10
