My Review: I made the mistake of sitting down to watch this film one friday evening, it being already late. I was almost immediately drawn in and was completely enthralled until the very. last. scene.
This film was so unlike I’d expected it to be. I’ve now developed a new found respect and enthusiasm for Woody Allen’s work, where before I had thought him a little too pretentious for my taste. Now I see I was naively mistaken and am looking forward to delving into more of his work.
This film was a piece of art, bathed in the warm glow of the spanish sun with Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johanson brighting up the screen as two best friends completely alike and yet ultimately different in their views of love.
The film was beautifully narrated throughout telling us the tale of these two best friends and their summer in Spain, and how they met the painter Antonio which changed their outlook on life - even if he did not change their lives exactly.
It was intense and intricately told with Penelope Cruz playing Antonio’s tortured ex-wife. I adored its artistic feel and life-affirming intimacies within the characters. It was both American and Spanish at the same time and was one of the most interesting films I’ve seen in a long while...
Score: 8.5/10
