Tagline: You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies
IMDb Plot Summary: On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history... but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications.
My Review: There isn’t much that I can say about The Social Network that hasn’t already been said. But I'll try anyway...
I last saw the film in cinema when it first came out and I’ve been excited ever since to own it on DVD.
It hadn’t lost any of the magic the second time round - if anything it was better the second time around - a true testament to how remarkable this film really is. I was able to pause or rewind and catch some of the jokes that I missed the first time as the dialogue is so sharp. But that is the reason I love it. You have to be on it, right from the beginning. I remember sitting in the cinema as the credits rolled thinking how incredible Aaron Sorkin’s writing was. It really is one of the best scripts I’ve seen in a long time.
And then of course the acting was top notch too. Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield standing out particuarly, making every emotion real, every shade of frustration, jealousy and ambition is right there for the audience to see and feel themselves. It is such an immersive movie, no time for breathers it bounces from one incident to the next, shot beautifully and directed brilliantly by the marvelous David Fincher.
The Social Network was one of the best films last year - just pipped creatively by Inception in my eyes - who were both cruelly robbed at the Academy Awards earlier this year, not at all getting the recognition they undoubtedly deserve.
Score: 9.5/10
